It has been a month since a lot of people made a new years resolution or committed to a promise they made to themselves. So I wanted to write up a simple blog post on how I started my blog since I get this question a lot and hope this inspires that one person to go after their goals. My first post went up March 26, 2015, which seems like a lifetime now and this will be my 100th post with my first video of 2018 to follow along.
I have come a long way since starting this blog and learned from past mistakes- but no matter what getting started is the hard part. So I'm sharing the easiest way to get started in three steps.
1) COME UP WITH YOUR BLOG NAME AND MAKE SURE THE DOMAIN & SOCIAL PLATFORM USERNAMES ARE AVAILABLE
I had many names related to men's fashion, but none of them were going to be more authentic than “Allen Robateau.” Thankfully my last name isn’t that common, so the domain was available! I used Godaddy and recommend always doing a quick Google search for discount codes before buying to save a few dollars with any domain or hosting provider.
2) CHOOSE WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO START BLOGGING
You can google this and spend hours on one decision, but until you start writing it doesn't matter. I went with Blogger because of the free hosting rather than Wordpress and a hosting provider- which I probably will switch over when the timing and investment are right. I can go into a more in-depth post on the pros and cons if you guys want that.
3) PICK YOUR BLOG THEME
Don't be too basic and use the generic ones available on the platform. You can quickly go on Etsy or Google and find pre-made minimal or artistic blog templates that fit your aesthetic for only five or so dollars- it goes up to the hundreds, but you definitely don’t need anything too fancy to start with. Don’t stress over your theme too much either. Find one that fits your brand and just start posting!
Here are two sites I check on the regular:
